Of all academic interventions, tutoring has been shown to help students gain academic ground the most rapidly. Evoke uses research-informed approaches and cognitive science in our programming and instruction. We believe there are barriers to learning and situations that hold individuals back, and that it is our job to understand their needs, identify those barriers, and help students address them.
Individualized tutoring and intervention can improve the phonological awareness and word decoding skills of older students, without which the deficit will remain. The WISE READING® Remediation Program, based on the doctoral research approach of Nancy Wise, delivers phonological and phonemic awareness for struggling readers.
Our academic strategists are allies who partner with students to teach research-informed approaches—grounded in science—to overcoming executive function barriers. They provide students with the resources, tools, strategies, accommodations, and external scaffolding they need to master the skills required for independent learning and reduce their cognitive overload.
In the move to college or university, students often lose the supports they received in high school. As a result, many struggle academically and emotionally. We offer personalized coaching focused on the development of metacognitive skills, identifying effective strategies and solutions that help students bridge the gap between ability and performance. Coaching focuses on increasing the individual’s ability to plan, prioritize, and organize efficiently and effectively, and emphasizes a proactive approach to learning.
Evoke’s individualized summer programs help to minimize the effect of deficits in academic and organizational (executive function) skills and prepare students for the next academic year, including any upcoming transitions to high school or postsecondary studies.
